Is indicated to prevent or reverse negative nitrogen balance in patients when: 1. The alimentary tract, by the oral, gastrostomy or jejunostomy route, cannot or should not be used. 2. Gastrointestinal absorption of protein is impaired by obstruction, inflammatory disease or its complications or antineoplastic therapy. 3. Bowel rest is needed because of GI surgery or its complication such as ileus, fistulae, or anastomotic leaks. 4. Metabolic requirements for protein are substantially increased as with extensive burns.
